Property Tax Listing Information for 2010
The personal property listing forms are the same as for 2009. What you listed in 2009 will be shown on the 2009 listing form. Follow the directions on the form to list any additional property or to delete property you no longer own. Please correct any errors on the listing form and return to the Alexander County tax office.
Licensed vehicles:
Please do not list vehicles you purchase renewal tags or new tags for. Property taxes are billed on these vehicles upon renewal of your current tag or the purchase of a new tag. The current law regarding property taxes on licensed vehicles has been in effect since 1993.
What to list:
Untagged vehicles, campers, trailers and motorcycles:
Any of the above that are not tagged must be listed for property taxes during the month of January.
Dealer tags:
Vehicles operated under dealer tags for more than one year must be listed for property tax during the month of January.
Mobile homes, boats, motors, aircrafts (includes gliders and other flying craft.)
All income producing farm equipment:
In the event you have stopped farming and someone else is using your farm equipment; the equipment must be listed for property taxes. If you claim farm equipment on your income tax reporting, the equipment must be listed for property tax.
Furnishings owned and rented by a landlord.
Tools used by carpenters and mechanics.
All assets and supplies of businesses, manufacturers and industries.
All improvements or changes to real estate.
When to list
Listing for 2010 taxes begins January 1, 2010. The deadline for listing is January 31, 2010. Completed forms delivered to the tax office with U.S. Postal service postmarks after January 31, 2009 will be subject to a 10% penalty as prescribed by law.
If you do not receive a form to list your property, you must request one from the county tax office.
Elderly/disabled exclusion
To be eligible for the elderly exclusion you must be at least 65 years of age or totally and permanently disabled by January 1, 2010, and your total combined income cannot exceed $27,100.00.
If you received this exclusion last year you do not need to reapply.
Circuit breaker tax deferment program
New program for 2009 requires an annual application
To be eligible for this tax deferment program you must be at least 65 years of age or totally and permanently disabled by January 1, 2009, and your total combined income cannot exceed $40,650.00. The owners must have occupied the property as a permanent residence for at least five years and be a north Carolina resident. Contact tax office for more information. This program is not an exclusion it is a deferment with taxes becoming due with interest at the time of property being sold or the owner is deceased.
Disabled veteran exclusion
This program excludes up to the first $45,000.00 Of the appraised value of the permanent residence of an honorably discharged veteran who has a total and permanent disability that is service-connected or who receives benefits for specially adapted housing under 38 U.S.C. 2101. There is no age or income limitation on this program.
New applicants must request an application from the county tax office during the month of January. If you have questions about the exclusions or the deferment program please do not hesitate to call the county tax office.
If your income exceeds $27,100.00 For this year and you received the elderly exemption last year you must notify the tax office of this change in income to avoid penalties and interest being charged to you.
