  NCDOT PERMANENTLY CLOSING RAILROAD CROSSING IN ALEXANDER COUNTY 

  RALEIGH ― The N.C. Department of Transportation will permanently close the Dagenhart Frame Road (State Road 1501) railroad crossing in Hiddenite on April 19.  Signs alerting motorists of the closure will be posted this week.

  Once closed, motorists can access the area south of the Dagenhart Frame Road crossing from N.C. 90 and the area on the north side of the crossing from Wayfound Church Road (S.R. 1500).

  An Area Crossing Study identified the Dagenhart Frame Road crossing for closure because motorists have a difficult time seeing potential trains as they approach the tracks. It represents part of NCDOT’s overall effort to reduce the number of redundant, high-accident or low volume rail/highway at-grade crossings throughout the state.

  When possible, the department works with communities to close or consolidate low volume or redundant crossings. Since 1993, NCDOT has closed more than 155 public at-grade rail crossings.

  Help Alexander County GIS locate our cemeteries 

  Alexander County GIS (Geographic Information Systems) is in the process of collecting information and creating a data layer of Alexander County cemeteries. These will include public as well as private family cemeteries, current or abandoned.

  If anyone has information on a remote or little known cemetery please contact the GIS department at 632-1376 or 635-3024.You may also email us at lharrington@alexandercountync.gov or gbrown@alexandercountync.com

  Some of these may be from the 1800′s and very difficult to find. With your help we can make the data set as complete as possible.

  Alexander County GIS (Geographic Information Systems), with the help of Miss Mel at the library, have edited and compiled videos from the footage filmed in the mid 1980′s by Alexander County resident Kenny Mecimore. These videos air on the county government channel. Please tune in to learn about our local dams and their importance to the county in the past.

  This is to inform the public that a public hearing will be held to adopt the proposed Western Piedmont Regional Transit Authority annual budget for the urban and rural transportation programs for fiscal year 2011 (July 1, 2010 through June 30, 2011). The public hearing will be held on Thursday, March 11, 2010 at 10:00AM before the Western Piedmont Regional Transit Authority Board of Directors at the Western Piedmont Regional Transit Authority Offices, 1515 4th St. SW, Conover, NC 28613.   Investigators with the Alexander County Sheriff’s Office arrested Allen Jennings “A.J” Campbell, W/M age 20, of Taylorsville on Friday, February 26, 2010.  Campbell was charged with 2 counts of Statutory Rape of a 14 year old by a defendant that is more than 6 years older than the victim, 2 counts of Indecent Liberties with a child, and 2 counts of Contributing to the Delinquency of a Juvenile.  Campbell was placed under a $30,000 secured bond and had his first court appearance in district court on Monday, March 1, 2010.
