    What Is Child Support Services?

Child Support services is a nationwide program established by Congress in 1975 to ensure that both parents support their children to the extent of their ability. In Alexander County the program is administered by Social Services. The federal legislation mandating the Child Support Program is Title IV-D of the Social Security Act. Sometimes, the program is called the IV-D (4-D) program.

    Where Do I Go?

Alexander County Child Support Enforcement is located within the Alexander County Department of Social Services at 604  7th Street SW, Taylorsville, North Carolina 28681. The phone number is (828) 632-1080.

    Who Is Eligible For Services?

Services can be provided to any North Carolina parent or custodian regardless of income level. Individuals receiving Work First Family Assistance and Medicaid are automatically referred to the local child support enforcement agency. Persons receiving public assistance are required to cooperate with child support enforcement as a condition of their eligibility for assistance. Persons not receiving public assistance may apply for and receive child support services upon the payment of a $10.00 or $25.00 application fee, based on income guidelines from the Federal Register. This includes aunts, uncles, grandparents, court-appointed guardians, or others who are caring for a child. For more information about the program the following resources are available to answer questions about the CSE program:
Phone: 1-800-992-9457 toll free, or any local child support enforcement agency
    Internet: http://www.dhhs.state.nc.us/dss/cse/cse_hm.htm

Custodial parent, custodian, or non custodial parent may call toll free  number(1-800-992-9457) for complete case information such as payments, arrears, court dates scheduled and any other case activity  twenty four hours per day 7 days per week.  There are customer service representatives that are available as well during day time hours.

    Payment Information?

North Carolina has a central collection process for receipting child support payments. Custodial parent or custodian may request direct deposit or NCKids Card, which is a debit card.

North Carolina Observes Vulnerable Adult and Elder Abuse Awareness Month

    May 10 – June 18

Show the world you care by wearing a purple ribbon

Each year, more than two million vulnerable and older adults are victims of abuse, neglect, and exploitation. Research has shown that older adults who are abused, neglected and exploited are three times more likely to die within ten years than those who are not. According to national statistics, elder abuse is grossly under reported because vulnerable and older adults who are being abused find it very difficult to tell anyone due to shame and fear. Elder Abuse affects men and women of all ethnic backgrounds and social status; it occurs in private residences and in facilities.
In 2009 there were more than 17,000 reports of abuse, neglect or exploitation of vulnerable and older adults made to North Carolina’s 100 county departments of social services. Reports are made not only by doctors and other professionals but by family members and concerned citizens in our communities. Anyone who suspects that a vulnerable or older adult is in need of protection is required by North Carolina General Statute (GS 108A-102) to report this information to the department of social services in the county where the adult resides.
Governor Bev Perdue has proclaimed May 10, 2010 through June 18, 2010 as Vulnerable and Elder Abuse Awareness Month in North Carolina. This timeframe ties the awareness period to both the Mother’s Day and Father’s Day holidays, in the hopes of reinforcing the spirit of respecting and valuing, not just parents, but all elders.
We all have a responsibility to support the safety, welfare, and dignity of North Carolina’s vulnerable and older adults. We urge all citizens to work together to help protect adults from abuse, neglect, and exploitation. It is imperative that North Carolinians refuse to tolerate the indignity of Elder Abuse.
