William Hammer is married to Peggy Childers Hammer and is the father of two children, David and Sara. William is a life-long resident of Alexander County and is a 1969 graduate of Taylorsville High School. William is a former poultry farmer and was co-owner of W & H Motors, Inc. for 16 years. William is a former member of the Alexander County Board of Education (1994-1998) and is the former chairman of the Highway 16 South Water District. He is a member of the Masonic Lee Lodge #253 and a member of the Scottish Right Bodies of Winston-Salem. William is also a member of the Oasis Shrine Temple in Charlotte and is the former president of the Brushy Mountain Shrine Club. William is a member of the Reformation Lutheran Church where he is a member of the property committee and is currently serving as president of the church council. First elected as county commissioners in 2000, he was re-elected to his second four-year term on Nov. 2, 2004. On Dec. 6, members of the board elected William to serve as chairman for 2005.
