Family Support Services
Child Support Services
Child Support services are provided to assure that children receive adequate support by locating the absent parent, establishing paternity, medical and financial support, and enforcing court-ordered child support obligations. This service is available to families without regard to income.
Child Day Care
Safe, affordable and quality child care can be obtained through the child day care subsidy program that helps parents to secure and maintain employment.
Emergency Assistance
A one-time cash assistance payment available to families with children under age 21 in crisis situations.
North Carolina Health Choice for Children
Health Choice is a health insurance program to serve children from working families who earn too much money to qualify for Medicaid, but who cannot afford private health insurance. A child must be under 19 years of age. The program may have an annual premium that cannot exceed $100 per family.
Food and Nutrition Services
A benefit program designed to assure nutritious meals for low-income families. Eligibility is determined by number in household and income/resources. Benefits are limited to three months to able-bodied adults without children. Referral to employment and training programs is mandatory.
Work First Program
Provides temporary short-term financial/medical assistance to low-income families. A family is required to assume personal responsibility for themselves, cooperate with Child Support, and actively participate in work-related activities leading to employment and self-sufficiency.
Medicaid
Helps families and individuals access medical care. The program covers prescriptions, inpatient and outpatient hospital care, physician services as well as routine preventive check-ups for children. The program also emphasizes prenatal care for pregnant women. Medicaid also helps adults remain in the community and pays cost of care for citizens in nursing home placement.
Carolina ACCESS
This program is designed to link Medicaid customers with primary care physicians who agree to coordinate their health care. Authorization from the primary care provider is required for non-emergent care in the hospital emergency rooms, or for specialized services.
Low-Income Energy Assistance/Crisis Intervention
The Energy Assistance Program offers a one-time cash payment to families to assist with heating expenses. Crisis funds are available to assist families experiencing a heating or cooling emergency. These payments are made directly to vendors for households experiencing life-threatening or health related emergencies.
